Funnel-Web (Female)

The Female Funnel-Web is approximately 35mm in length. It is one of the world’s deadliest spiders. It is a ground dwelling spider and is very aggressive in Summer and Autumn. They can climb into washing baskets and hide in clothes.

The Female Red-Back is approximately 10mm in length and the Male 3mm. There have been Fatalities recorded from Red-Back bites. Red-Backs preferred habitat is in rubbish and under houses. They prefer dry and sheltered areas.

White-Tail

The Female White-Tail spider is approximately 20mm in length and the Male 12mm. White-Tail bites can cause skin ulceration and require treatment as people have been known to lose a limb due to the ulceration. White-Tails are found in garden, under bark and indoors.

POISONOUS (TOXIC) BITE

Mouse (Female)

The Mouse Female spider is approximately 20mm in length. It has Toxic Venom and Large Fangs, making the bite deep and painful. They are ground dwelling and are often mistaken for a Funnel-Web.

Mouse (Male)

The Mouse Male spider is approximately 15mm in length. It has Toxic Venom and Large Fangs, making the bite deep and painful. They are ground dwelling and are often mistaken for a Funnel-Web.

Common Black House

The Common Black House Female spider is approximately 18mm and the Male 9mm. They tend to be a timid spider; however, they are still Venomous and can cause nausea and sweating in their victims. They are generally found in webs in window frames, eaves and fences.

Garden Wolf

The Female is approximately 35mm and the Male 20mm. These spiders are not aggressive. They are ground dwelling and often found in lawns.

Trap-Door (Female)

Trap-Door Female is approximately 35mm in length. They are not an aggressive spider, however, are mildly toxic. They are ground dwelling and like to burrow. They also can be mistaken for a Funnel-Web.

Trap-Door Male is approximately 20mm in length. They are not an aggressive spider, however, are mildly toxic. They are ground dwelling and like to burrow. They also can be mistaken for a Funnel-Web.

Garden Orb

The Garden Orb Spider Female is approximately 30mm and the Male 20mm in length. They are not in the habit of biting and are quite harmless. They are found in large suspended webs in gardens.

St Andrew’s Cross

The St Andrew’s Cross Female is approximately 25mm and the Male 5mm in length. The are reluctant to bite and are harmless. They are found in large suspended webs in gardens.

Huntsman

The Huntsman Female Spider is approximately 45mm and the Male 30mm in length. They are a large spider and can be very intimidating. They are very timid and rarely bite. They tend to liver under bark in the daytime and they will wander indoors.

SPIDER-BITE FIRST AID

Bite symptoms include sharp pain, sudden swelling, nausea, vomiting & diarrhea.

Funnel Web Bite: Sudden salivation. Muscular twitching. Breathing difficulty.

What to do

  • Check breathing and pulse
  • Calm the patient
  • Apply pressure with bandage on bit area
  • Do not move the patient
  • Call 000 for ambulance.

Red-back Bite: Intense spreading pain, hairs standing on end.

What to do

Apply ice-pack to bit area and take patient to the nearest hospital.

Always keep the patient calm and still. Always bring any transport to the patient.
